The Legacy of Newgrounds: Which Games Are Left in History?

If the internet in the 2000s was the Wild West, Newgrounds was its main saloon, full of madness, creativity and digital art on the edge. It was here that flash hits were born, animations became popular and a culture was formed that influenced a whole generation of players and developers. Today, let’s look back at the games from Newgrounds that became truly iconic.

Alien Hominid

A platforming icon and the first Newgrounds game to make its way to consoles. Controlling a little yellow alien, you fought FBI agents and all sorts of Saturday-morning-cartoon-style machinery, only with blood. The game was later released on PS2, Xbox and GameCube – an unprecedented success for a flash project.

The Last Stand

A hardcore survival game where you shoot zombies, build barricades and search for survivors. Atmospheric, grim, tense – the game set the tone for a lot of post-apocalyptic titles that came later.

Dad ‘n Me

A purple thug and his kid get into a massive playground brawl – and it was fun, stylish and unexpectedly dynamic. An iconic beatmap from The Behemoth that has become a fan favorite.

Interactive Buddy

Just a doll and a bunch of tools… but how much time we killed experimenting, torturing and having fun with this virtual “friend”. A simple idea, but perfectly realized and endless room for creativity.

Thing-Thing Arena

A gritty action game with customization, meaty action, and a black and gray atmosphere. It was like a flash version of Matrix, only with a bigger arsenal.

Castle Crashers (demo)

Before becoming a hit on Xbox, Castle Crashers started out as a short demo on Newgrounds. Vibrant art, cooperative gameplay, loads of humor – everything we love it for originated there.

Newgrounds Rumble

A fighting game with all the iconic Portal characters, from Pico to Salad Fingers. A fan’s dream in a single file.

Newgrounds was more than just a website. It was a laboratory for crazy ideas, a launching pad for future indie stars like Edmund McMillen (Super Meat Boy, The Binding of Isaac) and Tom Fulp (The Behemoth). And even though the Flash era is over, the legacy of Newgrounds lives on in every pixel that made us stick around until the wee hours of the morning.

What Newgrounds game would you play again without hesitation?
